Topstep Review: The Trading Combine, the One Rule and What It Costs to Get Paid

Topstep Review: The Trading Combine, the One Rule and What It Costs to Get Paid — Quantum Algo guide
◆ THE SHORT ANSWER

Topstep is a futures-only prop firm, in business since 2012, that sells a monthly-subscription Trading Combine ($50K at $49, $100K at $99, $150K at $199 a month) with one hard rule — a Maximum Loss Limit of $2,000, $3,000 or $4,500 that trails on end-of-day balance — a profit target of $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000, no time limit and a consistency target that keeps your best day at or below 55% of the target. Pass and a $149 activation fee opens the Express Funded Account, where the split is 90/10 and payouts start after five winning days of $150 or more. It is the most trusted futures evaluation with the clearest rules and the best dashboard; the costs are a subscription that compounds if you take months, the activation fee, a flat-by-3:10-PM-CT rule with no swing option, and a consistency cap that punishes big days. Rating 4.3 / 5.

Topstep is the firm the futures evaluation industry was modelled on, and most of what has gone wrong elsewhere — twelve-rule fine print, intraday trailing drawdowns, payout delays — is what Topstep has managed to avoid. That does not make it cheap or universal. This review is for the trader working out whether a monthly Combine plus an activation fee beats a one-time challenge: what the one rule and the consistency target actually do to a trading plan, what the Express Funded Account pays and when, where the subscription model bites, how Topstep compares with FTMO and FundedNext, and a $100K Combine built day by day to pass inside a billing cycle. The planner turns your own daily numbers into the days to pass and the real cost of the attempt.

What is Topstep?

Topstep is a futures-only proprietary trading firm based in Chicago, in business since 2012, which makes it one of the oldest names in the evaluation-account model and the one most other futures firms copied. You pay a monthly subscription for a simulated Trading Combine of $50K, $100K or $150K in buying power; hit the profit target without touching the Maximum Loss Limit and you are moved to an Express Funded Account, still simulated, where you keep 90% of what you make. Trade that well enough and the risk team may call you up to a Live Funded Account on real capital. It trades CME futures — equity indices, energies, metals, rates, FX and ag — on its own TopstepX platform.

The firm's reputation is built on two things: it has paid traders for over a decade without a payout scandal, and its rules are simpler than the industry average — one hard rule in the Combine, a consistency target that raises the bar rather than failing you, and no time limit. The cost of that simplicity is a monthly subscription that keeps billing until you pass or cancel, an activation fee on the way to funding, and a "no swing" rule that closes everything at 3:10 PM Chicago time every day. This review is for the trader deciding whether $49–$199 a month plus $149 is a better route to funded capital than the one-time-fee firms — FTMO, FundedNext, Apex — and what the rules actually do to a day-trading plan. Numbers below are as displayed on the checkout and the Topstep Help Center in September 2026; the firm changes them, so confirm on the day you buy.

At a glance: the verdict

Rating: 4.3 / 5. The most trustworthy futures evaluation on the market, with the clearest rule set and the best trader dashboard. It loses points for a subscription that quietly compounds if you take three months to pass, the $149 activation fee, the 3:10 PM flat rule that rules out any hold, and a 55% consistency target that punishes exactly the kind of day a good trend trader occasionally has.

Best for: index and energy day traders with a repeatable intraday process who can spread a target over ten or more days; traders who value payout reliability over headline profit splits; anyone who has been burned by a firm with twelve rules. Not for: swing traders, anyone whose edge is a few big days a month, forex and crypto traders (it is futures only), and anyone outside the countries Topstep serves.

The Maximum Loss Limit is the whole risk framework. It starts a fixed distance below your starting balance and trails upward with your end-of-day balance — not intraday equity — until it reaches the starting balance, where it locks. Touching it at any moment during the session liquidates and fails the Combine. Because it trails end-of-day, a big green day that gives some back before the close does not drag the floor up with the high of the day, which is friendlier than the intraday trailing drawdown Apex and most others use. Because it locks at the start balance, the rule stops tightening once you are $2,000–$4,500 up.

The consistency target is the rule people misread. Your best single day must be at or below 55% of the profit target (the checkout page has displayed 50%; plan around the stricter figure). Breaching it does not fail you; it raises the target to best day ÷ 0.55, so a $4,000 day on a $6,000 target means you now need about $7,300. In effect it is a minimum-days rule expressed in dollars: you cannot pass a $100K Combine in one $6,000 day, and you cannot pass in two $3,000 days either, since one of them will be more than 55% of the total until the other catches up. The dashboard shows the live percentage, which takes the arithmetic out of it.

The optional Daily Loss Limit — the "Responsible Trading Advantage" toggle at checkout — is a soft rule: hit it and you are flattened for the day, but the account stays open and nothing is failed. It is worth switching on for anyone who has ever revenge-traded an afternoon. Trading hours run from 5:00 PM to 3:10 PM Chicago time the next day, everything must be flat by 3:10 PM, and there is no overnight or weekend holding at any stage.

From the Combine to funding and payouts

◆ Dashboard · objectives, floor and consistency on one screen
Topstep trader dashboard showing the account balance over time against the maximum loss limit and profit target lines, the path-to-funding objectives panel with the consistency target, account stats such as highest and lowest day and profit streak, the performance tracker with win rate and average winning and losing trade, and a chart of successful trades by duration
The dashboard is where Topstep is better than most firms: the objectives, the floor, the consistency percentage and your best-day exposure are on one screen, so you never have to compute your own rule status.

Pass the Combine and the Express Funded Account (XFA) opens on payment of the $149 activation fee — or with no fee if you chose the higher "No activation fee" subscription, which is the better deal only if you expect to pass in one or two cycles. The XFA is still simulated, keeps the same Maximum Loss Limit and contract scaling, and is where you get paid. The split is 90/10 in your favour from the first dollar.

There are two payout paths. On the Standard path you need five winning days of at least $150 net profit each — they need not be consecutive — and can then request up to 50% of the balance, capped at $5,000 per request. On the Consistency path you need three trading days and a consistency percentage of 40% or below (largest day ÷ total net profit), with the cap at 50% of balance up to $6,000. The consistency figure resets after each payout, so a large day after a payout is manageable. Blow the XFA and Topstep offers up to two reactivations through its Back2Funded programme at the same size, which is more generous than most firms' "buy a new challenge" answer.

Above the XFA sits the Live Funded Account on real capital, awarded at the risk team's discretion for traders whose tape holds up. Topstep's own published figures put the share of Combine attempts that pass in the high teens and the share of XFA traders who reach live funding well under one per cent; both are worth holding in mind against the marketing.

Where Topstep is good

  • One hard rule. The Maximum Loss Limit is the only thing that fails a Combine, and it trails on end-of-day balance, not on the intraday high.
  • The consistency target raises the bar instead of failing you — you can trade through it.
  • No time limit and a free reset credit with every rebill, so a bad month costs the subscription and nothing else.
  • Payout reliability. A decade of payouts, published pass and payout statistics, and 90% from the first dollar in the XFA.
  • The dashboard. Objectives, floor, consistency percentage and best-day exposure are on one screen — the best in the category.
  • Back2Funded: two reactivations of a blown XFA at the same size rather than a new Combine.
  • The optional Daily Loss Limit, which is a soft flatten rather than a failure, and which at checkout has come bundled with higher XFA payout caps.

Where it falls short

  • The subscription compounds. Three months on a $100K Combine is $297 before the $149 activation — more than most one-time-fee challenges at the same size.
  • The $149 activation fee is a second charge on the way in; the "No activation fee" path is just that fee spread over a higher monthly price.
  • Everything flat by 3:10 PM CT, every day, at every stage. There is no swing version. A trader whose edge needs the overnight session is not a Topstep trader.
  • The 55% consistency target is hard on trend-day traders. One large day on a good trend can turn a nearly-passed Combine into a longer one.
  • The Express Funded Account is still simulated, and the step to live capital is discretionary and rare.
  • Futures only, on TopstepX only for the Combine. No forex, no crypto CFDs, no MetaTrader.
  • Payout caps of $5,000–$6,000 per request in the XFA slow down the scale a good trader can reach.

US tradersYesNoYes (check current terms)

The honest summary is that Topstep is the safest place for a US futures day trader and a poor fit for everyone else. If your edge is intraday index or energy futures and you can build a target over two weeks of even days, the subscription is cheap for what you get and the payout history is unmatched. If you trade forex or hold overnight, FTMO's Swing account or FundedNext's Stellar models are the comparison; if you want a futures firm with a faster route to payouts and are willing to accept an intraday trailing drawdown, the Apex review covers that trade-off.

How it fits a Smart Money workflow

The Combine rules shape the strategy more than most traders admit. The 3:10 PM flat rule and the no-overnight policy make it a session-structure business: the New York open, the mid-morning liquidity sweep of the overnight high or low, the afternoon continuation. The prop-firm strategy guide covers the general approach; on Topstep specifically, the two numbers to build around are the 55% best-day ceiling and the trailing floor. A $100K Combine wants roughly $300–$600 days — a couple of 1–2R trades on ES or NQ with one or two contracts — rather than swings for $2,000. The SessionScope script marks the sessions and the overnight range, the Liquidity Sweeps script flags the run on those levels that starts most tradeable moves, and the Institutional Key Levels script keeps the daily levels on the chart. The premium engine, Zeno, prints the signal with a stop and targets sized for exactly this kind of day; a Zeno signal after the opening sweep, with one contract and a target at the next level, is a Combine-sized trade.

Worked example: a $100K Combine built to pass

Two ES contracts, one setup: the sweep of the overnight high or low in the first ninety minutes of New York, entered on the return through the level with a stop beyond the sweep and a target at the opposite side of the opening range or the next daily level. Risk per trade $250 — ten points on one contract or five on two — with two attempts a day at most. A losing day is therefore capped at $500, well inside the $2,000 optional daily limit and a comfortable seven days from the $3,000 floor even at the worst.

Week one: three winning days of $520, $610 and $480 and two losses of $250 and $500 — $860 net, best day $610, which is 10% of the target and nowhere near the 55% ceiling of $3,300. Weeks two and three run the same way: $1,140 and $1,390. Balance $3,390 after fifteen days, floor now trailing up to about $400 above the start. Week four adds $1,270 on a trend Tuesday that offered a third trade — a $1,050 day, still under $3,300. Week five reaches $6,120 on day twenty-three: passed, best day 17% of the total, inside one billing cycle plus a few days, for $99 × 2 and the $149 activation. The whole plan was "small even days"; the rule set rewards nothing else.

Mistakes traders make with Topstep

  • Trying to pass in a week. One big day raises the target; the Combine is built for ten to twenty even days.
  • Forgetting the floor is checked intraday. It moves at end of day but it is enforced at every tick.
  • Holding into 3:10 PM. The platform flattens you; the trade you were nursing is closed at whatever the market gives.
  • Sizing off the buying power. $100K is not $100K — it is a $3,000 floor. Size the stop to the floor.
  • Paying for months you are not trading. Cancel or use the reset credit; the subscription does not pause itself.
  • Choosing the No Activation Fee path on a first attempt. It only wins if you pass fast; most people do not.
  • Treating the XFA like a live account. It is simulated and rule-bound; the consistency percentage and the payout caps still apply.
◆ Key takeaways

Topstep is the safest futures evaluation and the simplest: one rule, no clock, a consistency target you can trade through, 90% from the first funded dollar and a decade of payouts. Budget for the subscription to run two or three cycles and for the $149 activation, build the target from small even days, keep every position flat by 3:10 PM CT, and size to the floor rather than the buying power. If your edge needs overnight holds or a few big days, look at FTMO or FundedNext instead.

Do you know the Topstep rules?

Questions traders ask about Topstep

How much does Topstep cost?+

The Trading Combine is a monthly subscription: $49 for $50K, $99 for $100K and $199 for $150K in buying power on the Standard path, billed until you pass or cancel. Passing adds a one-time $149 activation fee for the Express Funded Account, unless you chose the No Activation Fee path, which has a higher monthly price. A reset costs the monthly price, with one free reset credit issued at each rebill.

What are the Topstep Trading Combine rules?+

Reach the profit target ($3,000, $6,000 or $9,000 by size) without touching the Maximum Loss Limit ($2,000, $3,000 or $4,500), which trails on end-of-day balance until it locks at the starting balance. Keep your best day at or below 55% of the target or the target rises. Stay within the contract limits, trade only permitted products and hours, and be flat by 3:10 PM CT. There is no time limit.

What is the Topstep consistency rule?+

In the Combine, your single best day must be at or below 55% of the profit target. Exceeding it does not fail you; the target increases to your best day divided by 0.55. In the Express Funded Account the payout consistency target is 40% (largest day ÷ total net profit) on the Consistency path, and it resets after each payout.

Is the Topstep Maximum Loss Limit intraday or end of day?+

It moves only at end of day — it trails your closing balance upward until it reaches the starting balance and locks — but it is enforced in real time. If your equity touches the current floor at any moment during the session, the account is liquidated and the Combine fails.

How does Topstep pay out?+

In the Express Funded Account the split is 90/10 in your favour. On the Standard path you become payout-eligible after five winning days of at least $150 net each; on the Consistency path after three trading days with a consistency percentage of 40% or below. Each request can take up to 50% of the balance, capped at $5,000 (Standard) or $6,000 (Consistency).

Can you swing trade or hold overnight with Topstep?+

No. All positions must be closed by 3:10 PM Chicago time every trading day, at every stage, and nothing is held over the weekend. Topstep is an intraday futures firm; traders who need the overnight session should look at a firm with a swing account.

What platforms and markets does Topstep support?+

The Combine runs on Topstep's own TopstepX platform; Quantower can connect through TopstepX credentials. Markets are CME Group futures — equity indices, energies, metals, interest rates, FX and agricultural products. No forex CFDs, no crypto.

What is the Topstep Express Funded Account?+

The simulated funded stage you enter after passing the Combine and paying the $149 activation. It keeps the same Maximum Loss Limit and contract scaling, pays 90% of profits, and is where Topstep's risk team watches for traders to call up to a Live Funded Account on real capital. If you breach the MLL, Back2Funded offers up to two reactivations at the same size.

Is Topstep legit?+

Yes, by the standards of the industry — Chicago-based, operating since 2012, with a long public payout history, published pass and payout statistics, and an unusually transparent rule set. The usual caveats apply: the funded stage is simulated, the step to live capital is discretionary and rare, and the subscription keeps billing until you cancel.

Topstep or FTMO?+

Different markets first: Topstep is futures only and serves US traders; FTMO is CFDs and does not accept US clients. Beyond that, Topstep is a monthly subscription with an activation fee, an end-of-day trailing floor and no overnight holds; FTMO is a one-time refundable fee with static loss limits and a Swing account that allows news and weekend holds. Intraday futures traders lean Topstep; forex and swing traders lean FTMO.
