Can You Use VWAP on a Daily Chart?

Can You Use VWAP on a Daily Chart?
◆ Can You Use VWAP on a Daily Chart? in one sentenceStandard VWAP is intraday-only — it resets each session, so on a daily chart it is meaningless or won't plot. But VWAP is not strictly only for day trading: Anchored VWAP (starting from a date or event you pick) and rolling/period VWAP (weekly, monthly, quarterly) both work across higher timeframes. Pick the right variant for your holding period, the way you would match any VWAP tool to your style.

The short answer

Standard VWAP cannot be used meaningfully on a daily chart. By design it resets at the start of every trading session and accumulates volume-weighted price only within that single day. On a daily or higher timeframe there is no intraday session for it to build across, so most platforms either refuse to plot it or show a meaningless single value.

But that does not mean VWAP is useless beyond day trading. Two variants extend the concept across any timeframe: Anchored VWAP, which you start from a specific date or event and let run indefinitely, and rolling or period VWAP (weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly), which resets over longer periods instead of daily. So the honest answer is: standard VWAP is intraday-only, but VWAP as a concept works fine for swing and position trading through these variants.

Why standard VWAP resets each day

VWAP measures the volume-weighted average price for a session. Its whole purpose is to answer "what is fair value today?" — a benchmark that intraday traders and execution desks measure against. To do that job, it must start fresh at each session open; yesterday's prices are irrelevant to today's intraday fair value. A stock closing above its VWAP on Tuesday has zero bearing on where Wednesday's VWAP begins.

This daily reset is exactly why standard VWAP breaks down on higher timeframes. On a daily chart, each candle is a whole session, so a session-resetting indicator has nothing to accumulate. The reset that makes VWAP so useful intraday is the same feature that makes it inapplicable to a daily chart — which is the source of most of the confusion around this question.

Anchored VWAP: VWAP for any timeframe

Anchored VWAP solves the timeframe limitation. Instead of resetting daily, you anchor it to a specific bar — a significant swing high or low, an earnings release, a major news event, or the start of a trend — and it calculates the volume-weighted average price from that point forward, indefinitely.

This makes it genuinely useful on daily and weekly charts for swing and position traders. Anchor it to a major low and the Anchored VWAP shows the average price everyone who bought since that low has paid — a powerful support/resistance and fair-value reference that respects the bigger picture. It behaves like a dynamic level you can lean on, much like a well-tested support or demand zone. Because you choose the anchor, it adapts to whatever structural event matters for your trade.

Rolling VWAP and choosing the right variant

Rolling or period VWAP is the other higher-timeframe option. Instead of resetting daily, it resets over a longer period — weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly — giving a fair-value line appropriate to that horizon. A common pairing is daily VWAP on intraday charts, monthly or quarterly VWAP on daily charts, and quarterly or yearly VWAP on weekly charts.

So, matching the variant to your holding period:

  • Day trading: standard (daily-reset) VWAP on 1–15 minute charts.
  • Swing trading: Anchored VWAP from a key swing, or weekly/monthly rolling VWAP on the daily chart.
  • Position trading: Anchored VWAP from a major structural point, or quarterly/yearly rolling VWAP on the weekly chart.

Whichever you choose, VWAP remains a fair-value benchmark, not a signal — pair it with structure and risk management to turn it into trades.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use VWAP on a daily chart?+

Not standard VWAP — it resets at each session open and measures intraday fair value, so on a daily chart (where each candle is a whole session) it has nothing to accumulate and is meaningless or won't plot. However, Anchored VWAP and rolling/period VWAP (weekly, monthly, quarterly) do work on daily charts, so the VWAP concept is usable beyond intraday through those variants.

Is VWAP only for day trading?+

Standard VWAP is, because it resets daily and is built for intraday fair value. But VWAP as a concept is not limited to day trading: Anchored VWAP runs from a chosen date or event across any timeframe, and rolling VWAP resets over weekly, monthly, or quarterly periods. Swing and position traders use these variants effectively on daily and weekly charts.

Why does VWAP reset every day?+

Because its purpose is to measure the session's fair value — what price the market has agreed on today, weighted by volume. To answer that, it must start fresh each session, since yesterday's prices are irrelevant to today's intraday benchmark. This daily reset is what makes standard VWAP useful intraday and also what makes it inapplicable to daily charts.

What is Anchored VWAP?+

Anchored VWAP is a variant where you choose the starting bar — a swing high or low, an earnings release, a major event, or a trend's beginning — and it calculates the volume-weighted average price from that point forward without resetting. This lets it work on daily and weekly charts, showing the average price paid since your chosen anchor, which acts as a dynamic support/resistance and fair-value reference.

What is rolling VWAP?+

Rolling or period VWAP resets over a longer period than a single day — weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly — instead of at each session open. This gives a fair-value line suited to longer horizons. A common setup pairs daily VWAP on intraday charts, monthly or quarterly VWAP on daily charts, and quarterly or yearly VWAP on weekly charts, matching the tool to the holding period.

Which VWAP should I use for swing trading?+

For swing trading, use Anchored VWAP started from a significant swing high or low, or a weekly/monthly rolling VWAP on the daily chart. These respect the multi-day picture that swing traders care about, unlike standard daily-reset VWAP which is confined to a single session. Anchor to the structural event most relevant to your trade thesis.

Does anchored VWAP work on weekly charts?+

Yes. Because Anchored VWAP calculates continuously from a chosen starting bar without a session reset, it works on any timeframe, including weekly. Position traders often anchor it to a major multi-month high, low, or macro event and read it on the weekly chart as a long-horizon fair-value and support/resistance reference.

Why won't VWAP show up on my daily chart?+

Because most platforms disable standard VWAP above intraday timeframes by design. Standard VWAP needs an intraday session to accumulate across; on a daily chart each bar is already a full session, so there is nothing to build. If you want VWAP on a daily chart, switch to an Anchored VWAP or a rolling/period VWAP indicator instead.

Is VWAP a good indicator for long-term investing?+

Standard VWAP is not, since it is intraday. But Anchored VWAP from a major low or a rolling yearly VWAP can be genuinely useful for longer-term investors as a fair-value and support reference — for example, the average price paid by everyone who bought since a significant bottom. As always, it is a benchmark, not a buy/sell signal on its own.

What timeframe is best for VWAP?+

It depends on the variant and your style. Standard VWAP is best on 1–15 minute charts for day trading. Anchored VWAP works on any timeframe depending on where you anchor it. Rolling VWAP should match your horizon — monthly or quarterly on daily charts for swing trading, quarterly or yearly on weekly charts for position trading. Match the VWAP variant to how long you hold trades.

Does VWAP repaint on higher timeframes?+

Anchored and rolling VWAP do not repaint once bars close — historical values are fixed, and only the current forming bar updates in real time, which is normal. As with any indicator, if you rely on the signals you should verify the specific implementation by watching it form live and confirming past values don't shift on reload.
