Confirmed Bar (Bar Close)

By ILY · Reviewed by Quant · Published

◆ The short answer

A confirmed bar is a candle that has closed, so its open, high, low and close are final; signals evaluated on confirmed bars cannot change later, which is why serious indicators and alerts are set to "once per bar close".

Also known as: closed bar, bar close confirmation, barstate.isconfirmed
Not to be confused with: Repainting

What it means

While a candle is forming, its close is the last traded price and its high and low can still extend. A confirmed bar is one whose close has been printed and will never change. In Pine Script, `barstate.isconfirmed` is true on the final update of a bar, and gating a signal on it means the signal is decided once, on final data.

The distinction drives everything about indicator reliability. A break of structure "on the close" is a decision made on a confirmed bar; a break "on the high" was made while the bar was still moving and may be undone by the close. Alerts set to "once per bar" can fire mid-bar and later prove false; alerts set to "once per bar close" fire only on confirmed data.

The cost is delay: you know the bar broke the level only when it closes. That delay is the price of a signal you can trust, and every non-repainting tool pays it.

How to identify it on a chart

  1. A bar is confirmed once the next bar has opened.
  2. In code: `barstate.isconfirmed` (Pine), or evaluate on the previous bar's values.
  3. For alerts, choose "Once per bar close".

Worked example

At 13:57 the 15-minute candle trades above a swing high; at 14:00 it closes below it. A signal evaluated on the confirmed bar never fired; a signal evaluated mid-bar fired and was wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What does "once per bar close" mean?

The alert condition is checked only when the bar closes; it cannot fire on an intrabar move that later reverses.

Does waiting for the close lose too much?

It costs one bar of delay; on a 15-minute chart that is fifteen minutes. Against the cost of acting on signals that vanish, most traders take the delay.

Can I confirm on a lower timeframe to reduce delay?

Yes — confirm the higher-timeframe level with a lower-timeframe close through it; the Smart Money Concepts Engine offers that option.

Is the current bar's value useless?

No — dashboards can show it live; just do not treat a live value as a signal until it confirms.
